Metro Police cut the signal on stolen phone sales

During the past week, the City’s enforcement agencies confiscated various illegal firearms, arrested 223 suspects and issued 45 914 fines for various transgressions. Among those arrested were two suspects who were caught selling stolen phones in Bellville.
On Thursday, 4 December, Metro Police officers conducting patrols in the Bellville CBD received a tip off about someone selling stolen cellphones from their vehicle.
Officers approached the area and found two suspects, aged 31 and 36, in possession of nine cellphones that they could not account for.
The suspects were arrested on charges of possessing stolen property and detained at Bellville SAPS for further investigation.
In Hanover Park on Friday, 5 December, Metro Police officers received a tip relating to an earlier shooting in the area, and conducted a search at a house where they recovered a .22 revolver and eight rounds of ammunition, and detained four suspects at Philippi SAPS.
In the early hours of Thursday morning, CCTV operators spotted a suspect pointing a firearm at another individual in Bonteheuwel, and then tracked him to a house in the area where he was found in possession of an unlicenced 9mm firearm and 11 rounds of ammunition. It later emerged that the firearm had been reported stolen in Mfuleni.
These arrests were among 93 made by the Metro Police Department in the last week. Officers also issued 1 852 notices for various offences.

Law Enforcement officers made 104 arrests and issued 2 146 fines. They also confiscated at least five firearms in the last week, and on Saturday, 6 December, LEAP officers assisted the South African Police Service (SAPS) with the arrest of five suspects in Gugulethu on charges of extortion and possession of a stolen vehicle.
On the roads, Traffic Officers recorded 41 916 offences, impounded 221 public transport vehicles and executed 1 417 warrants of arrest.
Officers also arrested 26 suspects, which included 18 for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for reckless and negligent driving and six for other offences such as a stolen vehicle, assault of an officer and false documentation.
The PECC dealt with 1 704 emergency calls which included 104 physical assault related cases and 53 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
